Ford EVs Get Tesla Adapters, but Owners Must Act Quickly

• Tesla opens Supercharger network to Ford customers this week, with Ford EV owners needing a NACS adapter to begin using the stations.

• The adapter will be offered for free to owners who've subscribed to Ford's BlueOval Charge Network, but after June 30 of this year they will cost $230.

• Other automakers have also made plans to adopt Tesla's NACS standard, including GM, Honda, Kia, Hyundai, Genesis, Jaguar, Lucid, Mazda, Mercedes-Benz, Rivian, Porsche, Volvo, and a few others.

Ford isn't the only automaker that has struck a deal with Tesla that will see the Supercharger network opened to non-Tesla EVs starting in 2024, but it is one that will deliver that capability soonest.

"Starting today, Ford EV customers will have access to more than 15,000 Tesla Superchargers across the US and Canada, more than doubling fast charging options on the BlueOval Charge Network," said Ford President and CEO Jim Farley. "This move will improve the public charging experience by giving our customers even more choice and is a vital part of our growth as an EV brand."

The automaker plans to begin installing NACS ports as a standard item in new electric vehicles in 2025. But before that changeover, existing owners and lessees of Ford EVs with CCS connectors will be able to use the Supercharger network in the US and Canada thanks to adapters.

Ford has just begun letting owners and lessees of the Mustang Mach-E and the F-150 Lightning place orders for North American Charging Standard (NACS) adapters, which will be provided for free to those who've subscribed to the automaker's BlueOval Charge Network. Which is nice.

But there is a catch: Those eligible to receive one have to order it before June 30 of this year, as after that date the adapter will cost $230.

Commercial Ford EV owners will be able to get their adapters a different way.

"Ford Pro commercial customers will be contacted this spring by mail at the address registered with Ford Pro or via their Ford Pro account manager to order an adapter," the automaker said.

One item Ford hasn't mentioned so far is whether CCS-era Ford EVs produced after June 30, 2024, but before the changeover to NACS sometime in 2025 will still receive free adapters.

Such a move would be logical, and perhaps will be confirmed in due time.

In all, quite a few automakers have now committed to switching to NACS in North America, including General Motors, Honda, Kia, Hyundai, Genesis, Jaguar, Lucid, Mazda, Mercedes-Benz, Rivian, Porsche, Polestar, Volvo, and a few others. This means by the end of the year Tesla Supercharger stations could see... quite a few vehicles lined up to use them.

It remains to be seen just what the high reputation for reliability of Tesla Supercharger stations will mean for lines of non-Tesla vehicles wanting to use them, but Tesla owners should probably get ready to see an increase in traffic.
