Ford reveals higher power ratings for 2017 F-150's 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6

Ford says that its all-new 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 engine will give the 2017 F-150 pickup more torque than any rival in its class, even those with diesel and V-8 engines.

That's quite and accomplishment for the second-generation of Ford's first twin-turbo 3.5-liter V-6 that debuted several years back. The new V-6 delivers 470 pound-feet of torque, a 50 lb-ft improvement over last year, and it produces 375 horsepower, up 10 ponies from 2016

The 2017 version of Ford's 3.5-liter V-6 boasts new turbochargers and a host of weight and efficiency-saving technologies.

Ford notes that the 3.5-liter's torque bests that of the previous class leader, General Motors' 6.2-liter V-8, which is rated at 460 lb-ft of torque. The Nissan Titan XD's optional 5.0-liter Cummins turbodiesel V-8, is rated at 555 pound-feet of torque, but Ford, like Nissan, considers it in a class of its own somewhere between half-ton and heavy duty pickups. 

The next generation of Ford's 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine mates to the automaker's equally-new 10-speed automatic gearbox, a transmission it developed with, of all automakers, arch rival General Motors. Both automakers plan to utilize their versions of the new 10-speed in both their half-ton pickups—the F-150, Chevrolet Silverado, and GMC Sierra—as well as their pony cars—the Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro.

One thing Ford hasn't announced regarding the new V-6 is its fuel economy, but the engine updates and the 10-speed should help boost figures over the 2016 model's 15 mpg city, 20 mpg highway, 17 mpg combined EPA ratings.
