The Andretti Cadillac Formula 1 bid just received another boost.

While there's still been no official word from Formula 1 or the FIA that the Michael Andretti-led effort to bring an 11th team to the F1 grid is any closer to reality than when Andretti's big was rejected by F1 in January, Andretti continues to move forward.

On Tuesday, the group announced that it has added long-time technical expert Pat Symonds. Symonds, who most recently served as the chief technical officer for Formula 1, will join Andretti upon completion of a Gardening Leave at FOM.

“We couldn’t be more excited to welcome Pat to the Andretti family,” said Andretti Global chairman & CEO Michael Andretti. “Pat’s keen understanding of aerodynamics, vehicle dynamics and Formula One power units will be instrumental as we continue to build a competitive team. I believe his expertise has been pivotal in shaping the narrative of Formula One and his vote of confidence in joining our effort speaks volumes. I’m really happy with this next step as our work continues at pace.”

Simonds, 70, served as chief technical office at Williams from 2013-2016. His other career stops include technical positions at Benetton, Renault and Virgin Formula One teams. He has had a hand in 32 F1 race wins, four drivers' championships and three constructors' championships.

“I have had the pleasure to work with Pat in the past and he has a wealth of knowledge we can draw upon,” said Nick Chester, technical director for Andretti Cadillac. “Pat will bring expertise across technical areas and team operations in his role as Executive Engineering Consultant that will help us develop the team.”

As it now stands, Andretti has been invited to re-apply for entrance into Formula 1 for the 2028 season with Cadillac. That deal would be contingent on Cadillac being able to become the power unit supplier for the team.

Andretti recently opened an F1 headquarters and race shop at Silverstone in the U.K.
