When Formula 1 announced it would be implementing the cockpit protection halo for the 2018 season, teams and fans alike were skeptical of whether it would prove effective, or just ruin the car's looks and aerodynamics. Thanks to this new video, we can see how the halo prevented what could very well have been a fatal injury.

During last weekend's Formula 2 race in Barcelona, a collision between drivers Nirei Fukuzumi and Tadaskue Makino forced the rear of Fukuzumi's car up and over Makino's cockpit. The halo did its job without incident, preventing Fukuzumi's rear tire from making contact with Makino's head. The collision and its aftermath can be clearly seen in the Autosport video below.

The video also contains snippets of an interview with icon Jackie Stewart voicing his unequivocal support for the halo. He's not the only racing legend who's come out in support of the halo-1996 F1 world champion Damon Hill tweeted his support of the device after seeing video of the Fukuzumi/Makino crash.

According to Autosport, Makino says the halo probably saved his life. We have a feeling this video could change the minds of a lot of halo naysayers.
