Formula E Is Going Racing in Brooklyn

From Road & Track

The New York City ePrix double-header will descend on Pier 11 and the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal when the all-electric FIA Formula E open-wheel series drops into New York next July. With the 1.2-mile circuit's waterfront layout, the Statue of Liberty and lower Manhattan will provide iconic visuals and break new ground as the first motor race of its kind among the five boroughs.

"To race in New York City is a historic moment - not only for Formula E, but for motorsport in general - and again highlights the philosophy of Formula E to bring fully-electric racing to the world's greatest cities," Formula E CEO Alejandro Agag said.

"When we originally started the project we could only dream of bringing Formula E to a place like New York, with arguably the most recognizable skyline of any city in the world. I'd like to thank everyone involved in helping bring Formula E to New York for many years to come."

NYC mayor Bill de Blasio shared in Agag's enthusiasm for bringing a high-tech, forward-looking series to Brooklyn.

"New York City is where technology, sustainability and commerce collide. We are thrilled to be the new home of the ePrix," he said.

The FIA Formula E event in NYC follows the stillborn Port Imperial Formula 1 street race in New Jersey that failed to materialize in 2013 and again in 2014, and sees Formula E add its third American city to its history after competing in Long Beach and Miami.

The New York City ePrix double-header is scheduled for July 29-30, 2017, and will serve as the season finale.
