Yahoo Autos Formula E Race Cars Could Look Like This Starting in 2018
Believe it or not, the FIA-sanctioned all-electric Formula E racing series has been around for three seasons already. Since its inaugural race in 2014, it's gained a host of new big-name teams and suppliers like Jaguar, McLaren, and even Faraday Future. The series has enlisted a new chassis supplier for the upcoming 2018 season, and the first renders are stunning.
Since development for the new pure-electric racing series began in 2012, Formula E has used Italian manufacturer Dallara to supply chassis for all the teams. Now, Spark Racing Technology has just announced it will take over chassis supply duties from 2018 onwards. Alongside the announcement, the firm released some renderings of what the new car might look like. As you can see, it's drastically different from today's Formula E racer-and quite similar to the self-driving Formula E "Roborace" concept we first saw in early 2016.
Besides the obvious aerodynamic changes, we can see Spark Racing plans on fitting some sort of shielded cockpit design, as well as more streamlined wheel surrounds. It's a much more futuristic-looking design, one that matches well to the idea of a cutting-edge, all-electric race car.
