In spite of a fuel system that utilizes port and direct injection to maximize power and fuel economy, the 86’s consumption is merely average.

What’s New for 2018?

The EPA’s estimates for the 2018 86’s fuel efficiency are the same as last year’s model. We still haven’t had the opportunity to put an 86 through our real-world highway fuel-economy testing.

2017 Toyota 86

The lightweight Mazda Miata and Fiat 124 Spider not only score higher EPA fuel-economy estimates, they outpace those test numbers on our 200-mile fuel-economy test loop. We haven’t tested the 86 on our highway loop yet, but in our experience it isn’t difficult to achieve 30 mpg in one. For proof, our nearly identical long-term 2013 Subaru BRZ test car averaged 28 mpg over 40,000 highway and local miles.
