As the broad assortment of available engines would imply, the BMW’s fuel efficiency ranges from greedy to prudent depending on which one you choose. The gasoline-powered 3.0-liter inline-six under the hood of 35i models managed a thrifty 27 mpg in our real-world testing, beating the EPA’s estimate by 3 mpg. A diesel 35d model we tested last year managed an impressive 30 mpg.

Electric-Only Range

The xDrive40e model is rated at 14 miles of electric-only driving, a few short of the EPA estimate for the plug-in hybrid version of the Volvo XC90. Unless your commute is shorter than average, the plug-in hybrid model’s fuel savings are of questionable value.

We’ve devised our own fuel-economy test in an attempt to replicate how most people drive on the highway. Our procedure entails a 200-mile out-and-back loop on Michigan’s I-94 highway. We maintain a GPS-verified 75 mph and use the cruise control as much as possible to mimic the way many drivers behave during long trips.

We’ve put two different X5s through our highway fuel-economy test, and both overdelivered, which isn’t a rarity among its rivals. The X5 xDrive35d’s diesel engine managed a best-in-comparison 30-mpg result on our 200-mile fuel-economy highway test.
