The LaCrosse eAssist hybrid boasts the highest EPA fuel-economy estimates in this matchup, edging out the Nissan Maxima, which utilizes a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). In our real-world fuel-economy testing, the LaCrosse eAssist sent its rivals whimpering back to the gas pumps.

What’s New for 2018?

The new standard powertrain in the LaCrosse for 2018 is an efficient mild-hybrid setup composed of a 2.5-liter inline-four and an electric motor. It’s not quick, but it’s quiet, seamless, and very fuel efficient, delivering an economy-car-like 38-mpg result in our real-world testing. A new nine-speed automatic transmission teams with the optional V-6, and it keeps engine speed low during highway cruising, which helps deliver good fuel economy.

We’ve devised our own fuel-economy test in an attempt to replicate how most people drive on the highway. Our procedure entails a 200-mile out-and-back loop on Michigan’s I-94 highway. We maintain a GPS-verified 75 mph and use the cruise control as much as possible to mimic the way many drivers behave during long trips.
