As awesome as a 400-hp twin-turbo V-6 shoehorned into a compact crossover is, a recipe for good fuel economy it is not. That said, the Macan Turbo somehow earns the same EPA fuel-economy estimates as the less powerful Macan S, which has a smaller twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6. Even the Turbo equipped with the Performance package, which boosts output from the V-6 considerably, matches the EPA numbers of those models.

What’s New for 2018?

Since nothing has changed with the Macan Turbo’s thirsty powertrain, unfortunately the 2018’s low EPA ratings are also the same as last year’s model.

The V-6 Macans may share EPA data, but it’s not great EPA data. The Turbo carries the least-efficient agency estimates of the crossover competitors gathered here, and it is the only one with a combined estimate below 20 mpg. Still, none of the high-performance SUVs covered here are particularly efficient.

We’ve devised our own fuel-economy test in an attempt to replicate how most people drive on the highway. Our procedure entails a 200-mile out-and-back loop on Michigan’s I-94 highway. We maintain a GPS-verified 75 mph and use the cruise control as much as possible to mimic the way many drivers behave during long trips.

The Turbo’s 23-mpg performance in our highway test matches its EPA highway estimate. (We tested the higher-output Turbo with the Performance package, so a regular model might eke out a slightly better figure.) Jaguar’s F-Pace S fell short of its 23-mpg EPA highway estimate by 1 mpg, a shortfall also suffered by the Mercedes-AMG GLC43. Meanwhile, the Audi SQ5 and BMW X3 M40i both exceeded their humble EPA highway numbers.

Due to its relatively large fuel tank, the Macan Turbo still manages a decent 450-mile cruising range despite its inefficiency. That’s a midpack figure among high-performance compact crossovers, but it should be enough to satisfy most buyers.
