General Motors Takes Next Step in Entering Formula 1 with Andretti Cadillac

The Andretti Cadillac Formula 1 program continues to move forward while it awaits final approval of its F1 entry.

Today, General Motors announced that it has formally registered to be a power unit supplier for the Andretti Cadillac F1 entry beginning with the 2028 Formula 1 season.

General Motors will become the seventh power unit supplier to the series, joining It Red Bull-Ford, Mercedes, Ferrari, Honda,Renault and Audi.

Last month, the FIA announced it had approved the Michael Andretti-led entry's Expression of Interest application into Formula 1. That deal, however, is pending final approval by Formula 1—namely series chief executive Stefano Domenicali and chief stakeholder Liberty Media.

Should Andretti Cadillac receive final F1 approval—and that's hardly a given as the team continues to face opposition from a majority of existing F1 teams—the team would likely come into the series in either 2025 or 2026. The team has not formally announced a power unit partner to bridge the gap to 2028.

General Motors sees engineering an F1 power unit as another way to help GM's development of electrification, hybrid technology, sustainable fuels, high efficiency internal combustion engines, advanced controls, and software systems.
