How Global Rallycross Cars Can Accelerate Faster Than Gravity

From Road & Track

You know the cars of Red Bull Global Rallycross are fast. Like, leave a superbike in the dust fast. With 600-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter engines driving all four wheels, Rallycross cars-like this Honda Civic or this VW Beetle-are serious performance machines.

But how do you build a rally racing hatchback that accelerates with a force of 1.4 g? How on earth do you get that power to the ground?

Our pal Jason Fenske at Engineering Explained just went to a Global Rallycross race to see firsthand how these wild racers do what they do, and he's here to explain every tweak and trick that goes into breaking the two-second 0-60 barrier in these racers.

Everything-the engines, the differentials, the tires, the tire pressures-is optimized for maximum acceleration and all-surface grip. And as Tanner Foust explains, it takes a hyper-focused driver perfectly executing the launch method to do it consistently.
