If there's a million-and-a-half burning a hole in the pocket(s) of your race suit, may we offer this 1992 Mazda RX-792P for your consideration, sire? Racecarsdirect posted the ad on its site, offered up by a very inconspicuous owner by the name of "Jim."

It's worth noting that "Jim" is Jim Downing, the owner/seller this very Mazda prototype. Downing invented the HANS device alongside his brother-in-law, the late crash engineer Dr. Robert Hubbard. The story of that device is a long and important one and the tech that Hubbard and Downing pioneered has trickled down from pro racing into the very grassroots of the sport; just yesterday, the staff of Road & Track had HANS on-site for a big group test at Lime Rock Park.

If anything, this prototype offers the chance to speak with a true pioneer in motorsports' history, whose invention has saved countless lives.

But also there's the car.

The ad states that Chassis RX792P003 was never raced, the third of three factory Mazda prototypes built for the 1992 IMSA GTP series. That means it's in fantastic condition and sports a four-rotor powerplant which will bore holes into the sides of your dome with its menacing, howling, absolutely bonkers engine note. Seriously, I've never heard ANYTHING louder than a four-rotor Mazda at full blast.

Just listen to this thunderbastard rip. But remember: anything with four rotors sounds even wilder from outside the car, so you'll be the envy of any vintage racing event where this car runs.

Legendary engineer Lee Dykstra designed the RX-792P, and the ad states that Downing's crew has gone through this chassis to get it up to running/racing spec. The paint covering the carbon body is original and the car completed a Road Atlanta shakedown in preparation for the sale.

If you have the means, we highly recommend it. Just ask Jim if he'll throw in a pair of ear plugs.
