Since its introduction for 2022, the off-road focused GMC Sierra 1500 AT4X has exclusively employed GM’s familiar 6.2-liter gasoline V-8. The AT4X model is now getting a welcomed powertrain addition for the 2024 model year by way of the revised 3.0-liter Duramax turbo-diesel.

The “baby Duramax,” as it's often called, has been a popular option among GMC Sierra buyers since its introduction, with the automaker noting that some 20 percent of Sierra 1500 customers opt for the diesel. The automaker believes that adding the engine to the AT4X offer sheet will only increase that sales mix, as the Duramax is well suited for off-road activities. In its previous form, the Duramax provided 277 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque. Thanks to new pistons, a revised combustion bowl, improved temperature management, new injectors, and a tweaked turbo, the 3.0-liter diesel now provides 305 hp and 495 lb-ft of torque. Those are gains of 10 percent and 7.6 percent, respectively.

For comparison, the 6.2-liter V-8 is rated at 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque. Both the diesel and gas engine options come exclusively mated to GM’s 10-speed automatic transmission. In lesser trims, GMC Sierra 1500 customers can also opt for either a 5.3-liter EcoTec V-8 or the 2.7-liter Turbo High-Output four-pot.

A small diesel powertrain makes a ton of sense for those who like to get out on the trails. The low-end torque provided by a diesel is great for inching your way through tricky sections, while the increased efficiency helps owners stay off the tarmac for longer stretches. It is worth noting that GM hasn’t shared fuel economy figures for the 3.0-liter equipped AT4X at this time, however.

Production will begin at the automaker’s Flint facility closer to the summer when the trucks go on sale. Expect pricing information and details about the fuel economy closer to that time. Regardless, this seems like a logical move for GM as they work to expand their off-road lineup across the SUV and pickup segments.
