The GT Concept Is a Tiny Return to Opel's Sports Car Roots

From Road & Track

After a string of teasers that didn't show us a whole lot, we finally got our first look at the Opel GT concept this morning. And as a vision for a future Opel sports car, we think it's a success. An adorable success.

Powered by a tiny 1.0-liter, three-cylinder, turbocharged engine mounted up front, the GT concept is rear-wheel drive and uses a six-speed, paddle-shifted transmission. It only makes 145 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque, but the engine is small enough to be mounted behind the front wheels, making it a front-mid-engine car.

Weighing less than 2,200 pounds (1,000 kilograms), Opel claims it can hit 62 mph in less than eight seconds and has a top speed of a little more than 130 mph.

It's small, it's low, it's light, and it's rear-wheel drive. There's no word yet as to whether or not Opel intends to produce the GT concept, but if it does, this is the kind of car we'd love to see brought to the States.
