“I had this at school today.’ Dickson student posts photo of gun, authorities react

Middle Tennessee students, parents and educators remain alert and anxious following Monday's fatal school shooting in Nashville.

A reminder of the current uneasiness arose Wednesday night in Dickson County when a middle school student posted a photo online suggesting he had a gun at school.

The county sheriff’s office arrived at the student’s home to investigate after students reported the online post to school administrators. Law enforcement determined the student carried a BB gun in his backpack at Burns Middle School.

Investigators determined there was no immediate threat, said county schools director Danny Weeks.

“Though it’s unusual for our office to report on disciplinary events, in light of the events of the week, I think it’s necessary to share this information with you,” Weeks said in a message to parents and students.

In the social media post, the student posted a picture with the caption: “I had this at school today.”

The student was investigated and disciplined.

“As we continue to grieve and mourn with the families of Nashville, let us make commitments to discuss appropriate actions and conversations with our students,” Weeks said. “Teaching them to use encouraging words and actions to build each other up, and turn away from words and actions that create fear.”
