In general, getting into amateur racing eats up a lot of money. Between the car, the gear, the fees, and the travel, you're looking at a pretty hefty cash outlay, with almost zero chance of earning any of it back with your stellar driving skills.

Detroit-based Slot Mods has just introduced a new ready-to-race slot car circuit to get you started in the world of 1:32-scale racing-or rekindle the slot car enthusiasm you fostered as a kid. The new Super Sport Raceway, like all Slot Mods circuits, is completely hand-built, with a level of detail to satisfy even the most demanding gearhead's eye.
This eight-foot by four-foot tabletop raceway features hand-painted racing lines, skid marks, and PVC curbing. Built on a 13-ply, clear-coated birch wood base, it comes with two Trans Am-era cars, a 1969 Ford Mustang and a 1970 Chevy Camaro, and the racing-grade controllers to drive them. Optional birch legs turn this table-topper into a piece of furniture that's more fun than any coffee table we've ever seen.
Slot Mods is mainly known for building huge, custom-ordered slot car mega-circuits, the likes of which are the centerpieces in rec rooms and garages. Bobby Rahal (you know him) has a custom Slot Mods setup. They usually measure in the 20-foot-plus range, and often they're exact replicas of famous circuits of the world.
So the Super Sport represents an entry-level offering from Slot Mods, and it comes at a price that makes it much more than a children's plaything: $2,295, plus another $225 for shipping within the US. That's a lot of money for a toy, even one that's built-to order by highly-skilled artisans in the Motor City.
But then again, have you priced a race-ready Miata and a season's worth of racing tires lately? A slot car setup may not offer exactly the same level of excitement as actual wheel-to-wheel racing ... but then again, you can't go wheel-to-wheel racing in your living room.
