What Happened to This Audi R8 After It Went off Camera?

From Road & Track

The Nürburgring is a scary place. Touted as one of the most dangerous racetracks on Earth, it's totaled more cars than we can count. With high speed turns and basically no runoff, there's absolutely zero room for error on the Green Hell. This Audi R8 driver overstepped his limits, and judging by the video, we can't tell if he actually paid the price.

The video, only 19 seconds in length, comes to us from 'Ring spotter Eifeler888 on Youtube. The first camera angle shows the R8 cresting into a left-hander way too quickly, and it seems the driver thought the car could handle swinging through that corner at near triple-digit speeds.

He was nearly right, though, because thanks to his approach angle, he was actually able to save the R8 from slamming into the guardrails (thanks in part to the AWD system on the Audi).

What happens next is up for debate. The second camera angle, showing the same corner, is able to capture the car coming back onto the tarmac. The driver wasn't able to keep it there, however, because we're just able to see the car swing to the other side of the track's edge.

Right before the video ends, we hear a loud thwap that sounds not unlike a car hitting the barrier. Was it the R8 going into one of the guardrails? We have no idea. The description doesn't specify, and the video gives no explanation.

Give it a watch yourself and figure out if this R8 driver really got that lucky.
