Yahoo Autos Here's Our Best Look Yet at the 2022 Subaru WRX
Update 08/16/2021: With the cancellation of the New York International Auto Show, Subaru has pushed back the reveal date of the 2022 WRX, according to the automaker. This story, originally published 07/21/2021, has been updated to reflect this.
The Subaru WRX is a performance-car icon, an all-wheel-drive sedan born from rallying and approaching its 30th (!) year in production. An all-new sixth-generation WRX is on its way, and we won't have to wait long for it. Initially, Subaru planned to show the 2022 WRX at the New York International Auto Show, but with the cancellation of that event, the company is pushing the launch back. A spokesperson tells us the car will now debut in "early September" with more specific information coming soon.
A teaser video, featuring an orange sedan sliding through the desert accompanied by the sounds of a boxer engine and a de rigueur action-movie-esque score, gives us our best look yet at the new 'Rex. Obviously, a lot of details are hidden, but pause the video and you'll see taillights that look a lot like those from the new BRZ and other unique styling touches. As with the previous-generation WRX, the 2022 model should look quite a bit different than a standard Impreza.
But like the Impreza, the 2022 WRX will ride on the Global Platform that underpins all new Subaru models and all-wheel drive will be, of course, standard. We also expect the WRX to adopt a version of Subaru's FA24 2.4-liter flat-four. In the Ascent, Outback, and Legacy, the turbocharged FA24F makes 260 hp and 277 lb-ft of torque, but anticipate more in the WRX. And as before, the WRX will likely offer buyers a choice of a six-speed manual or a CVT. No points for guessing which we prefer.
Between this and the new Nissan Z, this year is a good one for Japanese performance cars.
