Arctic testing is crucial for both the carmakers and the best automotive spy photographers out there. Lately, BMW has been seen putting some hard miles into their 8 Series coupe and cabriolet prototypes, as well as their next 5 Series GT and the Audi Q8 competitor, the X7 SUV.

It seems that the new 8 Series was put through its paces with both BMW's 4.0 twin-turbo V8 and the automaker's high performance diesel, with the petrol V8 powering the X7 prototype as well. Knowing where BMW stands with its electrification program, there's almost no question that all three cars will be available as i Performance hybrids a few month after their initial launch, due next year.

While the return of the 8 Series is good news for anybody who felt the 6 was too easy to park, the X7 is (literally) the biggest deal for BMW, especially in the US where premium large SUVs make big bucks. Meanwhile, the continuation of the 5 series Gran Turismo comes as a bit of a surprise to those familiar with the current car's disappointing sales figures.
