Yahoo Autos Here's How Jeep Could Build a Wrangler Pickup With a Removable Roof
We all know that the upcoming 2017 Jeep Wrangler will finally offer a pickup truck variant. And we simply can't wait. But in order to truly call itself a Wrangler, it's got to offer an open roof. And Allpar member "Ruptured Duck" has the inside scoop on how Jeep could make this possible.
This unofficial sketch, published on Allpar and featured here with the artist's permission, shows how Jeep could do an open-top pickup for 2017. Details are important here. Look closely, and you'll se what Ruptured Duck has rendered isn't a fully removable roof-it's a roof structure with removable individual panels. This is different from the current Wrangler, which offers either a canvas soft top or a fiberglass hard top that can be completely removed from the vehicle, revealing a separate interior roll cage.
Allpar claims that the upcoming "JT" pickup can't use the current Wrangler's fully-removable roof design-too little structural integrity. A permanent roof with removable panels would allow for open-top driving while providing enough structural integrity to pass today's stringent crash tests.
Allpar says that knowledgeable Jeep insiders have viewed Ruptured Duck's rendering and claimed that it's fairly accurate in how it portrays the open roof design. While such a layout would seem to eliminate the fold-down windshield that's been Wrangler tradition through three generations, we like the fact that this design would bring wind-in-your-hair driving to the pickup truck world, without sacrificing crash safety or structural rigidity. The more convertible trucks, the better, we say.
