For the third straight year, the total cash prizes awarded to Indianapolis 500 winners have reached a new record. This year's purse totaled $18.456 million, an increase of over $1 million over the previous year's total and more than $4 million over the 2008 purse that held the all-time record until 2022. Here's how it all splits out.

The biggest payout goes to race winner Josef Newgarden, who earned $4.288 million in cash prizes for his daring last-lap pass to erase Pato O'Ward's own daring last-lap pass and secure the win. That number includes a $440,000 bonus for a back-to-back winner from Borg-Warner, a payout of 22 years of rolling $20,000 incentives added every time a driver who was not defending the most recent race win took the victory. Even without the consecutive win bonus, the other $3.848 million are still a major increase over last year's $3.666 million winner's prize.

O'Ward brought home just over $1 million for finishing second, nearly doubling the per-driver average of $543,600. NASCAR star Kyle Larson, who won Rookie of the Year, brought back $178,000 after a $50,000 bonus for the rookie prize.

In addition to the record cash prize, the race's 659 on-track passes for position were also the most since 2017. Television ratings were also up eight percent despite a major rain delay that pushed the event back four hours. That, combined with an expected attendance of 345,000, made the event a major success despite the race day storms.
