Here's What A Base Porsche 718 Boxster Can Do For You

From Road & Track

CarAdvice's James Ward gave the new 718 Boxster nine out of ten, and it's pretty easy to see what makes Porsche's gateway product such a desirable car on the current market.

The first generation Boxster looks almost comically small today, even without being parked next to a new one. No wonder why! It came out twenty years ago, at a time when air-cooled 911s still had two years to go. The 718 pair is much closer in performance to a base 911 than an entry-level Porsche could ever before, and while the cheapest of them all is the base Cayman, a Boxster with the Chrono package can still be yours for $58,970.

Yes, the S is noticeably faster. In fact, it's quite brilliant despite still sounding exactly like a Subaru. So, if you have $68,400 plus change burning your pocket, by all means, go for it. Yet if you'd rather spend that ten grand on tires and premium fuels, the "base" 718, the car we'll always call Boxster is a solid choice too.

It might not have the best materials or infotainment system for that price, but it does pack Porsche's speed and build quality, and that's what really matters. It's also one feet closer to a Miata in philosophy, and as we all know, the Miata is the best roadster since the Mazda MX-5.
