Hiding Presents in the Car? Toy Ideas That Fit in the Cubbies in Your Car, Truck, or SUV

From Car and Driver

Looking for a better place to stash the kids' holiday presents out of sight? A recent Harris Poll survey suggests the best place to hide secret gifts might be parked inside your garage. The survey of 1000 people, conducted in October with the participation of Buick, revealed what many people consider their genius plan for keeping gifts a Christmas Day surprise. Seventy-nine percent of parents in the survey indicated that they've utilized their vehicle's storage cubbies and bins to stash gifts out of sight. Perhaps you're one of them. But not all vehicles are created equal when it comes to special hiding places.

Fortunately, Car and Driver measures interior storage space to find out which cars, trucks, minivans, and SUVs have the largest interior bins and cubbies-so we know which ones might be best suited for such clandestine activities. We use humble ping-pong balls to measure the volume of every vehicle's various storage pockets and bins. Why? Because it's funny! And also because the size of a ping-pong ball is easy to picture; it's something that most car shoppers are familiar with. After sorting through our data, we've put together a few examples and some hot kids' toys that might just wind up under your tree.

The Kia Soul's massive glovebox held 240 of our ping-pong balls, so it should be able to easily accommodate a toy the size of this toy robot named Cozmo. Not only does it engage children in games, it also low-key educates them on the fine art of coding.

The new-for-2019 Ram 1500 has a very large center console that managed to fit 619 of our ping-pong balls. That's enough room for a Nintendo Switch with room left over for several games to go along with it.

The Buick Enclave and its corporate cousin, the Chevrolet Traverse, offer huge storage bins under their cargo floors. In our testing, we found space for 1800 ping-pong balls there, which means this Avengers Hero Inventor Kit should fit quite nicely.

It might be a tight fit, but this cool folding electric bicycle from Swagtron might just fit in the bins that normally accommodate the Chrysler Pacifica's ingenious Stow 'n Go second-row seats. We threw nearly all the ping-pong balls we own in there–3592, the most we've ever fit in any storage bin.

If you haven't thought of hiding your holiday gifts in your car before, now might be the time. We'd advise a few things: Keep food items in a space that's more temperature regulated than a car's interior and be wary of toys that might make noise over bumps to avoid cluing curious younguns into your scheme.
