The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution lineup will forever remain one of the starlets of the tuning scene. Now, thanks to HKS in Japan, Mitsubishi owners with cars powered by the legendary 4G63 engine just got a serious upgrade. That’s because the tuning house has released a new block and stroker kit for the four-pot, which comes rated for 500 horsepower.

The DOHC variant of the 4G63 four-cylinder engine first arrived in Japan in 1987 under the hood of the Mitsubishi Galant. The motor was offered in both naturally-aspirated and turbocharged forms, and would find its way to the US market a few years later by way of the often overlooked Diamond Star Motors products. The engine wouldn’t find its spiritual home in the States until 2003 and the arrival of the Evo VIII, however. The pairing would help solidify the brand’s place in the hearts of speed seekers across the country, be that on gravel or at the track. Today, the Evo and 4G63 both carry massive fan bases, with companies like HKS continuing to develop new components.
