The New Honda Civic Type R Will Chase The FWD Nürburgring Record

From Road & Track

The current, European-market Honda Civic Type R uses a 306 horsepower turbocharged 2.0 and a very clever front suspension design to be as fast around the track as possible. Despite being a front-wheel drive car, it has minimal understeer and all the torque a turbo can give. That combination makes it the second-fastest front-drive machine around the Nürburgring, and pretty much on any other stretch of road as well.

When Volkswagen took away the crown with its limited edition, two-seater Golf GTI Clubsport S, Honda replied by setting lap records everywhere else. With the new, global Type R, there's no doubt they'll be back at the 'Ring, especially since they've been very busy practicing since June.

America's first Type R will debut with a trio of center exhaust (just like on a Ferrari F40) and a crazy body kit (very unlike anything from Pininfarina). Expect it to pack almost as much power as a Focus RS without the weight penalty (and complication) of an all-wheel drive system. If that sounds like good news, that's because it is. Honda can't afford to waste its red badge on anything that isn't worthy.
