Japanese manufacturers are known for occasionally holding out on the rest of the world when it comes to certain niche products and features. The Honda Del Sol was a prime example, as we here in America never received the car's uniquely designed power targa top. Now, thanks to the power of fabrication, we get to see what that top is actually like in this latest One Take.

This 1997 Honda Del Sol, built by Project Import of southern California, was commissioned by the owner as a track car that could hold its own on some of California's big open race tracks. The car has a fully built turbocharged VTEC engine making 260 horsepower to the front wheels, along with stronger brakes, grippy tires, and even a few carbon fiber body panels. Then there's that roof mechanism.

Equipped only in Europe and Japan, the Del Sol's "Transtop" is a uniquely designed system built to take the car's targa roof on and off automatically. Project Import was able to install the system in this US-market car, giving the owner everything they needed for open-top track day fun.

The mechanism seems incredibly complex, but that's all forgiven once you see it in action. Watch for yourself as Matt Farah of The Smoking Tire has a go through the canyons.
