  • 2007 to 2011 Honda CR-V crossovers are recalled because of a possible rear suspension failure caused by rust.

  • Honda dealers will inspect affected vehicles, install a brace, repair the frame, or possibly repurchase the vehicle if it can’t be repaired.

  • Interestingly, this recall affects northern states that commonly use de-icing agents on the roadway during the winter.

This might be a surprise to few, but making sure your wheels and suspension parts are securely fastened to your vehicle is important. Corrosion can sometimes liberate suspension pieces from a vehicle’s main structure and cause varying degrees of problems. This is why Honda is recalling 563,711 CR-Vs made from 2007 to 2011 that were sold or registered in states known for their winter weather road treatments. These vehicles can rust at the rear end and cause a rear trailing arm to fall off.

More specifically, the NHTSA damage report says, “In salt-belt states where de-icing agents are used to maintain the roadway, the de-icing agents, along with mud and water, could enter the rear frame through drainage/positioning holes when the vehicle is driven through flooded areas or puddles at high speeds. Over time, the accumulated de-icing agents/mud/water mixture could cause corrosion to the frame’s internal structure. If this occurs, the rear trailing arm can fall off.”

Vehicles sold or registered in these states are impacted:

  • Connecticut

  • Delaware

  • Illinois

  • Indiana

  • Iowa

  • Kentucky

  • Maine

  • Maryland

  • Massachusetts

  • Michigan

  • Minnesota

  • Missouri

  • New Hampshire

  • New Jersey

  • New York

  • Ohio

  • Pennsylvania

  • Rhode Island

  • Vermont

  • Virginia

  • West Virginia

  • Washington DC

  • Wisconsin

If you happen to have a CR-V from this era that was registered or sold in one of the above states, here’s the fix: A Honda dealership will inspect your CR-V and either install a support brace or repair the frame or could offer to repurchase the CR-V if the damage can’t be repaired. If the vehicle can be repaired, this would be fixed free of charge.

If you’re not sure if your CR-V falls under this recall, you can use Honda’s recall tool or call Honda’s customer service hotline.
