  • Hyundai has released a few images of the updated Azera full-size sedan, also known as the Grandeur in Korea.

  • The Azera hasn't been sold in the U.S. since the 2017 model year.

  • Hyundai did file for a trademark for the Grandeur name in the U.S. in 2018, which means there's a chance this model could return.

The Hyundai Azera was a largely forgettable sedan when it exited the U.S., but we're paying attention again thanks to a few images Hyundai has released of the new model ahead of its official debut next month. With dramatic styling inspired in part by the company's Le Fil Rouge, the Azera (also known as the Grandeur) looks to be making an appealing design turn in the right direction.

Hyundai calls its new design language "sensuous sportiness," and it manifests itself in smooth side surfacing, interesting lighting treatments front and rear, and an eye-catching diamond-pattern grille that fades seamlessly into the headlights. These chrome diamonds also light up like the illuminated chrome trim found on the new Sonata sedan. These new styling cues are now being applied to the newer generation of the Azera/Grandeur that was never sold in the U.S.

The interior has been redone as well and features two large 12.3-inch screens, one serving as a digital gauge cluster and one serving as the central navigation and audio display. A 1.6-inch wheelbase stretch is said to improve rear-seat room.

While we're hardly banking on seeing the new Azera on American roads anytime soon, Hyundai did file for a trademark for the Grandeur name in the U.S. last year. It's still doubtful that the company will see fit to sell it here due to declining sales in the full-size sedan segment. The Azera/Grandeur may also step on the toes of not only Hyundai's luxury brand Genesis, but also the related Kia Cadenza, which sells in small numbers in America.
