The New Hyundai Grandeur Is GorgeousHyundai

It's too bad Americans don't buy big sedans from non-luxury brands, because we won't get this: the new Hyundai Grandeur. It's a direct descendant of the forgettable Hyundai Azera, which left the U.S. market in 2017, and as we've come to expect from all new Hyundai products, it's a stunner.

Design-wise, it's like a mashup of the retro-future Hyundai Ioniq 5, Hyundai's striking (and not-sold-in-the-U.S.) Staria van, and the Genesis G90. The name is appropriate, given the car's long, low, wide stance. It has presence, and the interior looks quite luxurious too, perhaps even giving Genesis a run for its money. The steering wheel is impressively cool, recalling Citroen's idiosyncratic single-spoke steering wheels by blacking out the two outer spokes. Hyundai actually says the steering wheel was inspired by the first-generation Grandeur, a rebadged version of the Mitsubishi Debonair.

Hyundai resto-modded an original Grandeur back in 2018, turning it into an EV and fitting it with the brand's now-signature pixel-light motif. The new Grandeur draws on the resto-mod for inspiration, but it will be conventionally powered, with a mix of four- and six-cylinder engine options shared with Kia sibling, the K8. Those engines will power the front wheels, even though the exterior proportions of the car suggest that it could be rear-wheel drive.

We wouldn't expect a car like this to sell very well in the U.S., so there will be no letter-writing campaign to Hyundai. At least not from us. We're just happy Hyundai keeps producing design knockouts like this.
