What IndyCar Drivers Do During a Rained Out Day at the Track

From Road & Track

There are few things sadder than a bored racecar driver. With rain preventing practice today at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, 33 drivers had nothing to do but wait for the weather to improve and looking forward to lapping the IMS oval on Wednesday.

So what, exactly, does a Indy 500 do when his or her Indy car sits motionless in the garage for the day

"You just think about being a racecar driver even more," Conor Daly said in his finest sarcastic tone. The 24-year-old Indiana native-son of renowned Formula 1/IndyCar/sports car driver Derek Daly-found an immediate cure for his boredom, as did fellow Indy 500 drivers Marco Andretti and Spencer Pigot.

"I have an XBOX 1 connected to XBOX Live in my bus," Daly continued. "We decided to play Mario Kart."

With a dedicated lot for driver's motor coaches just behind Gasoline Alley, it wasn't a surprise to learn Andretti and Pigot stopped by to partake in a friendly video game-based race. And before that, Daly, who drives for the Honda-powered Dale Coyne Racing team, compared sleeping arrangements with Honda stablemate Alex Tagliani.

"We just evaluated each other's buses," he said. "I won. But he had heated marble floors so he won in that category. I do not have heated floors."

Daly's excellent stream-of-consciousness recap of his rain day schedule ended with musings over lunch options.

"Might go to Arby's," he added. "They have the meats. I'm a meat connoisseur."

In the end, he chose a taco plate supplied by his sponsor, Byrd's Cafeteria.

Ah, the life of a young IndyCar driver.
