Seven months. Fifteen tracks. Seventeen races. That’s what lies ahead for NTT IndyCar Series fans, teams, and drivers as the 2023 schedule of events was revealed today by the 111-year-old championship.

Racing organizations love to use the phrase ‘date equity’ when referencing their annual calendars, and in the case of IndyCar, what’s coming is a perfect representation of the premise as 16 of the 17 races fall in the same place—give or take a week or so—as they did in 2022, giving its audience a chance to watch or plan trips to attend at familiar times each year.

Keystone events like mid-April’s Long Beach Grand Prix and late May’s Indianapolis 500 are right where they’re expected, and with a nearly identical mirror to last year’s schedule, the regular start to the championship on the east coast in Florida will be capped by the routine end on the west coast in California. Stops in Texas, Alabama, Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio, Canada, Iowa, Tennessee, Illinois, and Oregon fill the rest of the championship run.

Only one significant change, with the trade of Detroit’s Belle Isle street circuit for a new layout in downtown Detroit, has been made.

“We have worked hard to achieve date and venue equity, which has been an ongoing goal at IndyCar,” series president Jay Frye said. “We are excited to return to downtown Detroit and the repaves at Road America and WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca will add new challenges for the drivers and teams. The intensity level will also be at an all-time high as we conclude the season with three weekends in a row. As we build off the record-breaking 2022 season, we could not be more enthusiastic to see how 2023 unfolds.”

NBC remains as IndyCar’s lone broadcast partner, with 13 of the 17 races and both days of Indy 500 qualifying reserved for the big network. Three races will be aired on NBC’s USA cable network and to the delight of few, IndyCar’s trip across the northern border to race in Toronto will be shown exclusively on the Peacock streaming service.
