Infiniti Reveals New VC-Turbo Engine Technology at L.A. Auto Show

This week at the 2016 Los Angeles Auto Show, Nissan Group’s Infiniti luxury car brand will introduce its newest variable-compression (VC) turbo engine. The automaker says the VC-Turbo is a significant advance in conventional internal-combustion engine technology that could power its future SUVs, such as the QX Sport Inspiration SUV concept that will be on display and is headed to become a production model in 2018.

The new VC-Turbo is a lighter-weight, turbocharged, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine that generates 268 horsepower and 288 lb.-ft. of torque, which Infiniti reports is comparable to the output of some 3-liter, 6-cylinder gasoline engines in terms of performance, while surpassing these engines in fuel efficiency by as much as 27%.

The new engine technology uses a multi-link system to raise and lower the reach of pistons to detect the car’s driving condition as well as driver instructions, selecting the best compression ratio for high performance (8:1) and high efficiency (14:1) as well as all ratios in between.

Compression ratio is important because it represents the relationship between the smallest and largest volume in an engine cylinder during the piston stroke to drive fuel efficiency and performance. Infiniti officials also say that the latest engine achieves lower noise levels and less vibration than most gasoline or diesel engines.
