James Bond's Next Aston Martin Might Be Electric

From Road & Track

Could it be? Could James Bond eventually give up the glorious wail of an Aston Martin gasser for the stealthy torque of an electric vehicle? It certainly would make sense, says Andy Palmer, CEO of Aston Martin.

According to CNBC, when asked whether the dapper spy could one day land behind the wheel of an EV, Palmer said that an electric car would be a good fit for Bond. He even went so far as to call the mass adoption of EVs "almost as inevitable as death and tax."

But the real reason for Bond to have an EV would be the power. "What does electric give you?" Palmer said. "It gives you phenomenal acceleration, phenomenal torque – immediate pick-up, there's no lag."

Indeed. Although we'd miss the angry sound of a rev-happy motor like the one in the DB10 created for Spectre, it's also quite fun to think about Bond punching the throttle on something like the company's RapideE electric concept and silently blasting off. And just imagine all of the gimmicks Q could probably devise with a bunch of lithium-ion batteries. Ludicrous mode? Elon who?

Putting Bond in an EV would also make sense for Aston Martin as a company. Having been associated with Bond on the movie screen since 1964's Goldfinger, the company doesn't really do traditional advertising, and the movies are one of its biggest promotional tools. With Aston making aggressive moves as of late to modernize its vehicles and expand its lineup, such visibility for one of its own electric vehicles could be smart.

If anything, the only problem might be figuring out what to do with all of the scenes where Bond has to stop and charge up his new ride. That's, uh, not very spy-like.
