Jeff Gordon Will Fill In for Dale Earnhardt Jr. at the Brickyard 400

From Road & Track

Welp, Jeff Gordon's retirement from NASCAR seems not to have lasted very long. As a result of Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s continuing concussion-like symptoms, Gordon will come out of retirement to fill in for Dale Jr. at this weekend's Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis and the following race at Pocono.

The news was announced in a press release from Indianapolis Motor Speedway sent out Wednesday and confirmed by Hendrick Motorsports. Interestingly, Gordon will drive a car featuring Dale Jr.'s iconic #88, marking the first time Gordon's ever ran a race in a car not wearing the #24. Earnhardt sat out of the race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway last weekend, with Alex Bowman filling in.

While no one is happy about seeing Dale Jr. sit out, fans will no doubt be excited for Gordon's temporary return as he's a longtime fan favorite. Gordon also racked up six victories at the Brickyard 400 and five at Pocono, so Hendrick Motorsports is likely pleased with Earnhardt's replacement.

As of right now, it's unclear when Dale Jr. will return to competition, since doctors have yet to clear him for racing.
