Less than three months ago, Jenson Button announced that while he will not race in 2017, he is also sure that he'll "get behind the wheel of the new car at some point". That point was supposed to be the first race of the 2018 season, but that's no longer the case. The former world champion had this to say about his decision:

The whole point of this [contract for 2018] was if, in three months' time, I had eaten myself stupid and I changed my mind. But I don't want to go into this race thinking it's not my last race - and it is. I will definitely step away from F1 happy with what I've achieved and definitely my life starts now.

While recent changes in McLaren's management could have an effect on Button's future plans, let's not forget that the team's other world champion, Fernando Alonso is also looking at his options outside of F1.

Button started at Williams sixteen years ago, after which he raced for Benetton and its succeeding Renault team. He won his first race in Hungary with BAR-Honda in 2006, and continued on by winning the championship with Brawn GP in 2009. McLaren had him for six years and following this Sunday, the Brit will retire with the third most starts under his belt at 305. We wish to see him on the podium for the 51st time.
