Yahoo Autos Jenson Button Will Replace Alonso for the Monaco Grand Prix
Earlier this week, McLaren Formula One driver and two-time Champion Fernando Alonso announced he would be skipping the Monaco Grand Prix this year to run the Indianapolis 500 with Andretti Autosport. It was rumored former driver Jenson Button would fill the empty McLaren seat for the Monaco GP, and now, we know for sure: Jenson Button will return to Formula One.
Jenson Button won the Monaco Grand Prix back in 2009, the same year he took the F1 championship overall. The 37-year old British driver took a break from Formula One after his lackluster 2016 season, but decided to return to replace the busy Alonso.
Though Button will not have the chance to drive the new high-downforce 2017 cars before race weekend, he seems confident it'll all work out.
"[Monaco] is a tricky street circuit on which a good driver can really make a difference – and, although the McLaren-Honda MCL32 hasn't begun the season well, I think it may be more suited to Monaco than to the faster circuits that Fernando and Stoffel have raced it on so far this season," Button told Motorsport.
"OK, I realise we won't have a realistic chance of repeating my 2009 victory, but I think we'll have a opportunity to score world championship points, which will be very valuable to the team in terms of constructors' rankings," he added.
As for now, Button coming to Monaco is a one-off return to Formula One, so all of you Jenson fans better grab your Monaco tickets before they disappear.
