July 28: Tazio Nuvolari defeats the Nazis in the "greatest motorsports victory of all time" on this date in 1935

The come-from-behind victory that spoiled the day for the Third Reich

On this date -- July 28, 1935 -- Tazio Nuvolari won the German Grand Prix at Nürburgring, beating the heavily favored home team in front of a crowd of 300,000 Nazis in what is often described as "one of the greatest motorsports victories of all time." Driving an Enzo Ferrari-built Alfa Romeo, Nuvolari (whose name, coincidentally, is an anagram for "I rout Nazi oval") was trailing by more than 35 seconds in the final lap when the lead car -- a Mercedes-Benz driven by Manfred von Brauchitsch -- blew a tire. Nuvolari soon passed the German and forced the Third Reich to lower its flag, which had been prematurely raised for the anticipated victory.
