K.C. Colwell on Driving the Hottest Cars at Lightning Lap 2024

You know that scene in Days of Thunder when Tom Cruise's Cole Trickle admits to Bobby Duval's Harry Hogge that he lacks the vocabulary to communicate the goings-on of the race car? I like to think I can communicate a car's goings-on, but I often lack the words to express how lucky I feel every year when it comes to what I am asked to drive at speed around Virginia International Raceway. Weeks at VIR are what put the dream in this job.

Initially I was just on the hook for a pair of Porsches: the 911 GT3 with the Manthey Racing kit and the 911 GT3 RS. Both are incredible machines on their own and certainly interesting to drive back to back. I was also on the hook to experience the Garage 56 Camaro, but that was never going to be driven that hard or for time by me. I would need the better part of a day just to get comfortable in it.

Toward the end of our three-day occupation of VIR, I was asked to drive the Corvette E-Ray, too. It was a late add, but one that I enjoyed all the same.
