From Car and Driver

It's no coincidence that both Hyundai and Kia have brand-new three-row SUVs launching around the same time. The new 2020 Hyundai Palisade and 2020 Kia Telluride are closely related under the skin, even if they appear quite distinct from each other on the surface. We examined both to outline the key differences, both objective and subjective, between the two.

Engine, Transmission, Towing

These two SUVs share a powertrain: a 3.8-liter V-6 that makes 291 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque. An eight-speed automatic transmission is standard across the board, and front-wheel drive comes standard on both the Telluride and the Palisade, with all-wheel drive available.

Kia officially says the Telluride can tow up to 5000 pounds, and Hyundai says to expect the same for the Palisade.

Exterior Size

While both the Kia and Hyundai have the same 114.2-inch wheelbase, the Telluride is 0.8 inch longer and 0.5 inch wider than the Palisade.

Both have an 18.8-gallon fuel tank.

Interior and Cargo

There are plenty of design differences between the two SUVs' cabins, but the interior dimensions are very similar. Key advantages for the Kia include:

  • Telluride has 0.7 inch more third-row headroom

  • Telluride has 3 cubic feet more cargo space behind the third row

Features and Safety

Both the Kia and the Hyundai come standard with several active-safety features, including forward-collision alert, automated emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control.

Infotainment offerings are similar between the two, with lower trims of the Palisade and Telluride coming with an 8.0-inch touchscreen and higher trims offering a 10.3-inch touchscreen. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality are standard across the board.

Price

Hyundai hasn't yet released pricing for the Palisade, which is scheduled to go on sale this summer. The Kia Telluride arrives at dealerships sooner, so we already know its pricing information. It starts at $32,735 for the base LX model and ranges up to just under $47,000 for the loaded SX model.
