The Lamborghini Tecnica is the latest in a long line of incredibly predictable V-10 Lambos. The process is well-established.

1) A new model is produced in coupe and convertible variants.

2) A hardcore, track-focused variant is produced with very sharp steering, aggressive suspension and bodywork, and uncomfortable bucket seats.

3) Lamborghini launches a street-oriented version of the hardcore version. It comes with the powertrain and suspension of the track version, but with comfortable seats and more interior trimmings.

4) This street model becomes the standard version on which the subsequent model is based.

5) Repeat, replacing the whole car every decade or so.

The Huracán Tecnica is step 3 in this four-step process. It features the powertrain and tuning of the STO, a variant that is mostly unsuitable for street use. Lamborghini then makes the seats more comfortable and offers more electronic and luxury options, paired with a street-oriented tire, a rear window, and a smaller rear wing.

The resulting package is a car that is playfully loose in a predictable environment like a wide, flat track. But that same package can be darty, harsh, and unpredictable on upstate New York backroads, where our PCOTY road testing took place. God help you if you get caught in the rain, as I did.

Turns out that even the street version is better on a track. On Monticello’s North Loop, the Huracan Tecneca strikes a great balance of all the things we love about the aging platform, with few of its drawbacks. If you don't want to pay up, remember the process. This'll be the normal car in no time.
