Yahoo Autos How The Lamborghini Huracan Performante Shaped the Air to Dominate the 'Ring
The Lamborghini Huracan Performante only packs 30 more horsepower than its LP610-4 sibling, and yet, it still managed to run around the Nurburgring 28 seconds faster, setting a new lap record in the process. That extra horsepower helped a bit, but that's not what made the Huracan Performante so blisteringly fast. It really comes down to Lamborghini's new Aerodinamica Lamborghini Attiva (ALA) active aerodynamics.
So how does it work? Our pal, Engineering Explained's Jason Fenske, breaks it all down in a new video that's super nerdy, but easy enough for a layman to understand.
Essentially, the ALA system relies on electrically-actuated flaps on the front splitter and on the engine lid to alternatively increase downforce and reduce drag. This helps the Performante be quick in the corners without any sacrifice to straight-line performance.
The Huracan Performante also uses "aero-vectoring" on the rear wing, which can apply or reduce downforce to each individual wheel. Theoretically, this helps the car rotate better, though Fenske is skeptical of its usage.
Either way, this short clip is a great explainer for why the Huracan Performante is so damn quick.
