The "Lightweight" Ford GT Competition Series Still Weighs More Than 3000 Pounds
With carbon fiber construction and a tiny interior, the Ford GT isn't a heavyweight, though it does clock in at more than 3000 lbs. If that concerns you, Ford's Competition Series package will let you shed options to shave some weight. That's the sort of thing we like.
Update: Shortly after this article was originally published on February 23rd at 2:40PM, a Ford representative contacted Road & Track with some clarification. The 3054-lb dry weight that Ford revealed back in January was measured on a Competition Series car, meaning that this isn't necessarily a "lightweight special edition." The package has been available since GT production began, and selecting the option will not make your GT any lighter than the 3054-lb. dry weight we reported last month.
Existence of the GT's Competition Series package was first noted by Brooks Weisblat of DragTimes.com, who has a GT on order, and then reported by Autoblog. Shortly after, the Competition Series option appeared on the GT's configurator page, and now Ford has officially released details on the package.
The exterior changes listed on the GT configurator include:
Standard Lightweight Gloss Carbon Fiber Wheels with Titanium Lug Nuts
Standard Titanium Exhaust System with Unique Titanium Tips
Unique Lightweight, Race Inspired Engine Hatch with Perspex Cover and Manual Latch
Bulkhead Fitted with Lightweight Gorilla Glass
Unique Exposed Gloss Carbon Fiber Stripe
Exposed Gloss Carbon Fiber Lowers, Mirror Caps and A-Pillars
Available in Shadow Black, Frozen White, Ingot Silver, Liquid Blue, Liquid Grey and Triple Yellow
The interior changes include:
Lightweight Ebony Black Alcantara Seats, Instrument Panel and Headliner
Exposed Carbon Fiber Console, Air Registers and Door Sills
Anodized Red Paddle Shifters, Anodized Red Instrument Panel Chassis Badge, and Red Pedal Adjustment & Emergency Door Release Pull Straps
Matte Dark Stainless Bezels, Finishers and Seat X-Brace
Unique Instrument Panel Plate and Steering Wheel Bezel
Incremental Weight Saving Actions Including Deleted A/C and Radio Hardware
Additionally, the GT Competition Series gets rid of unnecessary luxuries like cupholders in the interior storage bins, all in the name of a lower center of gravity.
It's not yet known how much weight is saved by opting for the Competition Series package, since Ford has only published weight specs for vehicles equipped with this package. It's also worth noting that some of the features included on the Competition Series, like carbon fiber wheels with titanium lug nuts, aren't exclusive to this package.
We're curious to see how many customers opt for the Competition Series package. It offers the greatest potential for performance, but at the cost of some luxuries that make a supercar like this a little more livable in the real world.
