Sometimes, late is better than never. After years of BMW dominating the utility-coupe market, Mercedes-Benz recently went full blitz into the segment, and now Audi is finally dipping a toe into the pool with the Q8. A concept made its debut at the Detroit auto show early last year, we’ve seen glimpses of the upcoming model in spy photos, but for the first time, Audi has released an official sketch of what the production car will look like.

Essentially a shortened Q7, the Q8 doesn’t appear to be as dramatically styled as the BMW X6 or Mercedes-Benz GLE coupes. Whereas Audi’s German rivals took the opportunity to create vehicles that looked almost entirely new, the Q8 cribs many of its design cues from the existing, and attractive, Q7. That’s not surprising, considering the design homogeneity that characterizes most of the Audi lineup.

The Q8 does have a more streamlined appearance, however. There’s a smaller greenhouse, a more raked rear window, and pronounced body creases. The rear lighting ditches the two-piece design for a slick light bar that stretches across the liftgate and is mirrored in the dual-exhaust design. Aside from the massive wheels, the sketch is exactly what we saw from the spy shots.

The Q8 will ride on the Volkswagen Group’s MLB Evo architecture, and we expect it to get a full range of engine offerings. That includes a turbocharged inline-four, a plug-in hybrid V-6, and possibly the new 354-hp turbocharged V-6. As indicated by the Q8 Sport concept, performance variants are also in the cards, possibly using Audi’s twin-turbo V-8.

How excited are you at the prospect of an Audi SUV coupe? Keen enough to watch a Q8-themed “original series” called Q8 Unleashed? Synopsis: The five-part miniseries follows Sandra and Quentin, “an extravagant power couple from the Golden State” who “had it all” before they were pulled into a crime drama. The first episode launches May 21 and begins the buildup to the car’s official debut. Here’s a preview:
