Yahoo Autos The Logistical Planning Needed to Run an F1 Team
F1 doesn't start back up again until the end of March, but for the logistics teams, the 2018 season is already underway.
The Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 team put together a video describing the logistics involved with shipping much of its race equipment around the world via sea freight. The figures are truly staggering.
According to one of the crew's support members, the Mercedes team uses four separate sets of shipping containers, each carrying a total of 23 tons of supplies, replacement parts, and other equipment. If a part is heavy (or cheap) enough, it travels to each race via one of the containers. Anything not found in these supplies is transported by air or land.
What's even more interesting than the packaging, though, is the timing. Mercedes just loaded one container set onto a boat this week, and it won't arrive in Melbourne for the season opener until about a week before the race in late March. After that, everything will be loaded back into the containers, and be shipped to Montreal for the Canadian GP in June.
What about the set of equipment from last year's Abu Dhabi GP finale? Well, that hasn't even come back yet. The amount of planning that has to go on to run an F1 team is seriously wild.
