Lucid Motors, an EV startup that also supplies batteries to Formula E racing, is gearing up to unveil its final production-ready Lucid Air sedan at an April event timed to the New York auto show. After years of showing off both its alpha and beta vehicles, the automaker—helmed by Peter Robinson, former Tesla Model S chief engineer—is about to pit its offering against both Tesla and the growing number of electrified vehicles from traditional automakers.

For those interested in being one of the first to own one of the company's yet-to-be-shown production vehicles, the company is currently accepting $1000 deposits. Get ready to wait a while for your new car to show up, though. Production is set to begin in the fourth quarter of 2020.

Assuming everything works out as the company has announced, new owners of the Air sedan, which is priced starting at $60,000, will receive a vehicle with an impressive 400-mile range, a top speed of 200 miles per hour, and a claimed zero-to-60-mph time of just 2.5 seconds.

To achieve all those stunning specs, the automaker is betting on its Formula E battery learnings and a highly efficient motor to best Tesla's range numbers. Before production can begin, Lucid will have to complete the construction of its Casa Grande, Arizona factory. While that’s going on, the company is currently building 80 beta versions that it says are 95 percent production-ready at its Silicon Valley headquarters for testing ahead of April’s unveiling.
