BMW recently showed the world the new 8-Series concept, a big-body coupe that's already been seen testing in camouflage. It's not just for the street: BMW announced over the weekend that the high-performance M8 will spawn a race car that will herald the automaker's return to Le Mans.

The M8, shown here in camouflage, was rolled out to the public at this weekend's Nurburgring 24-hour race, the first time BMW has acknowledged a high-performance 8-Series variant. Boasting larger air intakes, bigger brakes, and a quad-tip exhaust, the M8 will have "significantly boosted power and dynamic potential," BMW says.

More important is what the M-badged 8-Series will lead to: The M8 GTE, the car that will bring BMW back to Le Mans. The automaker last competed in the 24-hour race in 2011 with the M3 GT2; 2018 will mark the M8 GTE's debut.

“The BMW M8 GTE development program for our Le Mans comeback is in full swing,” BMW Motorsport Director Jens Marquardt said in a statement. “Developing a new racing car is always exciting, and in the case of the BMW M8 GTE the anticipation is that much greater still." Marquardt said the M8 GTE will debut at the 2018 Daytona 24 Hours.
