The era of electric racing is upon us, but as sideways tv-action legend Tiff Needell points out, there's room for improvement when it comes to Formula E, the pioneer series of this concept. For starters, the cars used for the first four seasons, the Spark-Renault SRT_01Es were lacking both performance and range, leaving much to be desired by both the drivers and the spectators.

Luckily, the second generation SRT05e are ready for the fifth season. But even if Formula E manages to entertain more now that BMW, Mercedes-Benz (through HWA) and Nissan got involved, I'm still rather curious to see how the FIA intends to make the World Rallycross Championship electric, since if anything, that series is all about pops, bangs, fireballs, and Group B-shaming levels of turbo power.

Meanwhile, the Tesla racing car was built to be used in the one make Electric Production Car Series, which is set for a 10-race European debut season.

Based on the most powerful Tesla Model S, the P100D with ludicrous mode, SPV Racing's EPCS V2.3 is a whopping 1100 lbs. lighter than the stock model. That's mostly thanks to a stripped interior and the fact that all body panels were replaced with semi-transparent flex-fiber composite ones.

The racing car also has a wider track, motorsport brakes and suspension, a front splitter and a decent fixed wing at the rear. But while it retains its 790 horsepower drivetrain and large central screen, one thing the team couldn't quite fix yet is the cooling. And so, in its early prototype stage, the EPCS V2.3, the world's quietest four-door racing car has to get back to the pits after a little over one semi-hot lap. Oh well.
