Maserati Grecale Barbie Edition: Amazing or AwfulMaserati

It was the cult-classic sitcom Community that first posited the idea of the "Darkest Timeline." Essentially, this is a version of the universe where all the worst possible outcomes come true, a concept the show revisited a few times over the years. The phrase and basic idea of the "Darkest Timeline" transcended the show, bad/absurd/upsetting things being labeled as evidence that we live in the Darkest Timeline. I would like to submit the Barbie Maserati Grecale as proof that we are, indeed, in the Darkest Timeline.

Maserati, that font of Italian cool, a company that gave us grand prix legends, the Birdcage, the Mistral, the Khamsin, and so many other great cars, teaming up with the Barbie brand for a ghastly one-off. The car was unveiled as part of Neiman Marcus' (typically insane) Fantasy Gift catalog, and we can't help but wonder, who's fantasy is this? And to add insult to injury, the car costs $330,000, $227,500 more than the Grecale Trofeo it's based on. At least 10 percent of the cost will go towards a Barbie-sponsored charity for girls.

The Grecale was created as part of Maserati's Furoserie customization program, and naturally, is finished in highlighter pink, with highlighter yellow accents for some reason. Inside, the pink accents are carried over in the stitching and on other pieces of trim. There are Barbie and Neiman Marcus logos on the front fenders, plus the Barbie "B" in place of the Maserati trident on the C-pillar and the seat headrests. If nothing else, it shows that limits of the Furoserie program are not bound by taste.

Still, Barbiecore is A Thing in fashion right now, and perhaps its acolytes will be tripping over themselves to get their hands on the one-off. We have reached out to Barbiecore icon Ziwe Fumudoh for expert comment and will update this post when we hear back. Until then, however, will be looking at pictures of 3500GTs to try and forget.
