If you have a recurring problem with your new car, the manual usually tells you to talk to the service manager at the dealership. After that, if your problem still hasn't been resolved, you're supposed to call a toll-free number to speak with someone at the automaker.

Sadly, calling that number is probably not going to get you any real help. The person you talk to may try to make you feel better, but according to consumer protection attorney and R&T contributor Steve Lehto, calling that number is usually a waste of time. Even if you clearly have a lemon, they'll tell you that you don't have a case.

Lehto says that's because the person you talk to isn't there to help you out. They're there to keep you from calling a lawyer. Unfortunately, as long as it doesn't rise to the level of fraud, it's perfectly legal for companies to lie to you or misinform you about your potential lemon-and your rights.

So if you've tried getting the automaker to help you resolve your problem, and it's gone nowhere, go ahead and call a lawyer. They'll be able to tell you whether or not you have a case.
